Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past and present are certain to miss the future.

John F. Kennedy

My ask.

I'm Doug Landry and I'm seeking your vote on March 29 for a five-year term as a regular member of the Natick Planning Board.

My platform.

I’m ready to contribute on Day One with...

Passion

Planning is exciting and impactful!  It can resonate throughout a community by enabling the creation of good jobs and new neighborhoods or by laying the framework for a new Town park or bike path.  Details are always essential along the way, but keeping the Big Picture in view is the most important challenge.  As a member of the Planning Board, I will value process that is meaningful and constructive, but will always be focused on results that matter.

Experience

I'm a certified planning professional with over 30 years of public and private sector experience.  I've written zoning by-laws, regulations, and master plans.  I've analyzed and negotiated transportation improvements for projects of all shapes and sizes.  And I've managed the design and permitting of high-profile developments throughout the Commonwealth, representing clients before local, state, and federal boards and commissions.  There's not much I haven't encountered along the way!

Perspective

The best communities are generational - that renew themselves by actively and intentionally embracing diversity, fostering equity, and pursuing inclusion.  The best communities are vibrant - that invest in their downtowns as magnets for civic life, culture, and commerce.  The best communities are resilient - that respect the environment, care for its citizens, and encourage innovation.  As a member of  the Planning Board, I will work to ensure that our decisions advance Natick as a generational, vibrant, and resilient community for all.

My life.

A bit about me...

I'm a 20-plus year resident of Natick, alongside my wife, Debbie, who was born and raised here.  Our two children - Benjamin and Charlotte - attend Natick public schools.  I'm actively involved with the community, having served in the past for three terms as a Town Meeting Member from Precinct 4 and as a current member of the Economic Development Committee.

I was born and raised in Athol, Massachusetts, as the youngest of four siblings (among two sisters and a brother).  My father was a factory worker and my mother was the administrative assistant to the Board of Selectmen.  I suppose you can say that blue collar economic development and civic duty run through my veins!

After graduating Athol High School, I attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science.  From there, I attended the University of Michigan to earn a Master of Urban Planning degree and returned to Massachusetts to become the very first Town Planner for the Town of Walpole.  I then moved on to the Massachusetts Department of Public Works (now MassDOT) where I eventually became Chief Planner for the Public/Private Development Unit.

For the last 25+ years, I've held progressively responsible and senior management roles at three prominent engineering consulting firms in the region.  I lead multi-disciplinary design teams on a wide range of real estate and economic development projects for developers and investors; corporations; government entities; and higher education, health care, and non-profit institutions.

I'm professionally-accredited by the American Institute of Certified Planners.  I serve on the Board of Directors for the Massachusetts Alliance for Economic Development (MassEcon) and chair the Government Relations Committee.  I'm a member of the National Steering Committee for LOCUS (a program of Smart Growth America) and serve as President of LOCUS Massachusetts.  In addition, I'm a member of the Advisory Committee to Northeastern University's School of Public Policy & Urban Affairs.  I'm also an active member of NAIOP and served on the Corporate Board of Directors for six years.

In any season, I love to spend time outdoors exploring the many Mass Audubon, Trustees of Reservations, and local conservation areas in MetroWest and across the Commonwealth.  And, of course, I love cheering on our children's club and school teams from the sidelines of the tracks, soccer fields, basketball courts, and volleyball courts of the region.

Please vote on Tuesday, March 29!

Thank you to everyone who encouraged me to run and who signed my nomination papers.  I will be unopposed on the ballot, but I take no vote for granted.  Your support will confirm our belief in an even better and brighter future for Natick!

Some recent work.

Zoning Reform for Equity

I was honored to help organize and emcee the recent 5-part series by Smart Growth America, "Commonwealth Communities: Smart Growth Strategies for Our Emergent Future."

Make Way for Walkability

The series focused on current topics important to Massachusetts as we look beyond the realities and challenges of the pandemic.

Planning for the Future of Transit

The goal of the series was to present useful information and thought-provoking conversation to equip municipal officials with the courage and optimism to pursue innovative community and economic development strategies for effective change.

Cultivating a Commonwealth-Wide Small Business Ecosystem

The speakers were an amazing "curated" lineup of local and national experts and practitioners.  Attendees of the series were from all four corners of the state and from across the U.S.

Incorporating Equity into Your Municipal Budgeting and Practices

The pandemic changed us all.  This series aimed to understand and harness that change for the common wealth of our communities.
